When a place is damaged by violent water caused by a natural disaster the result is at times shocking. The owner of the house is flustered and completely overwhelmed. There is a lot of damage to the house and stuff inside and outside of it that it is hard to decide where to begin to clean up and repair all the devastation. One of the things that needs to be dealt with is what to do with the food stuff in the pantry and in the vegetable garden.

Flood water usually is impure and tainted with sewage, bug killers, and dangerous chemicals of all forms. This is not something you should have all over the food you eat or in the water you drink. It is extremely important that you know how to manage the cleanup of your food and water sources to preclude severe risks to your family member's wellbeing.

If you have food in a garden that was engulfed with impure flood water don't try to collect it. There is no sure method to make it clean sufficiently to be consumed. The temperature that you need to use to prepare the food will not be hot enough to kill any microorganisms and added germs that have stuck to the vegetables making them toxic to have. Any garden products will have to be thrown away.

Food products like meat, eggs, and dairy goods should be thrown in the trash. They will be infected by the flood waters and almost certainly have spoiled also. Toss any loose food items in your home and any food that is stored in paper or cardboard as it will have been soaked with flood water and thus contaminated. Uncooked vegetables of any kind should not be eaten.

Canned goods are just about the only food products in your home that are salvageable. Check the cans to see if any of them are ballooned, have damaged seals, or if there are signs of leakage. Throw away any cans that are debatable. The cans that remain in decent shape could be saved. Remove the stickers from the cans as they are likely to be inundated with septic flood water. Use an indelible marker to label what is in the individual cans. The cans will have to be cleaned prior to them being opened. Rinse the cans in hot water with dish soap then disinfect them in a chlorine solution. They have to be dried to prevent the cans from rusting. Any sealed bottles must be examined for leakage and then washed like the canned goods. Throw out any bottles that are unsealed and discard any bottles that are secured with a cork as the stopper will absorb the dirty water.

Be sure that you are wearing shielding like safety gloves when you come into contact with the food, bottles, and cans in order to avoid the poisons within the flood water on yourself as this could make you really ill. All counters, appliances, pans dishware, and utensils need to be washed and disinfected prior to them being used to make food or consume food with.
